Sunglasses with MP3 player
![]()
Thump – No, I didn’t just walk into a wall, that’s the name of these cool looking sunglasses from Oakley.
These are apparently the worlds first digital music sunglasses which offer you hi-fi sound with 100% UV protection.
It comes with a USB cable meaning that you can transfer music straight away without any configuration required.
The ear piece has no cords and the controls are built into the frame. I would love to know how easy that is to control when you are running or working out. If anyone has a pair of these glasses, let me know.
It’s a 512MB player which will give you approximately 120 songs (8 hours).
The glasses run on a lithium -ion battery and according to their website, that should give you approximately 6 hours playback on 3-hour charge, 4 hours playback on 1-hour charge. The USB cable will recharge your glasses when you connect to your pc.
The glasses are shatterproof and scratch-resistant Plutonite® and the frames are lightweight and flexible for long term wear.
The sunglasses will connect to either PC or Mac which is great to hear.
These look pretty sleek and I like the idea of having a piece of equipment that has dual purpose. I also really like the idea of having no cords to deal with.
Retail price: $299.00US
If anyone out there has these, then feel free to comment on their functionality.
How much technology is too much technology?
Okay, you should all know by now that I love technology.
Gadgets are my best friend. I love investigating the products, looking for reviews, finding the best price. And then when you get it home, it’s the anticipation of opening the package. Peeling off the layers of bubble wrap, stickers, manuals (which I don’t read), moulded plastic and cardboard. Then, the excitement of putting it altogether and finally, turning on your newly acquired gadget and sitting down to the very important task of exploring it’s features.
Oh yes, gadget heaven.
Of course, this had nothing really to do with the product I am talking today, sort of.
On to business then. So, just how much technology is too much technology?
For instance, while working out, is it important to be able to watch tv, check your email, do a bit of surfing, listen to custom radio stations and get a workout history? Well no, obviously it isn’t but you know something, more often than not when I’m working out, those things do cross my mind. I can be half way through doing some sit-ups and think, I wonder if I have email? I do watch tv when I workout and will listen to my ipod as well if I’m in the mood. Imagine being able to do all that on one console while working out.
With that in mind, I’d like to show you this really cool product called the Netpulse N3i Entertainment System. It’s designed to be installed onto exercise equipment and gives the user access to some pretty neat things. When you log into the system, you can access preset preferences. These are some of it’s features:
- Favorite Email Users may set up the default e-mail with their own personal preference of e-mail service (Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, GMail, their own office web mail, etc.).
- Favorite Web Sites Users are able to set up bookmarks to their favorite web sites and internet media locations so they are immediately accessible.
- Favorite Search Engine Users may choose their own default search engine (Yahoo!, Google, etc.).
- ‘Email Me’ Button When a user comes across information or a site on the web that want to come back to, it can be sent to their personal e-mail with the touch of a button.
- Custom Internet Radio Users can set up their own personal radio station that will play songs based on their ratings of similar artists.
That’s just to name a few. Plus, you also get a keyboard! Seriously, that’s just cool! Oh, and it’s compatible with all exercise equipment. This little gem is designed for gyms to entice and keep members. But could you imagine buying one for home? Cool. I can just see it now, unpacking it from the box, taking off the plastic wrap..throwing away the manual…putting it together….heaven…
Fitness & GPS trainers
![]() |
I recently posted about my love of gadgets and an interest I have in finding products for exercise and fitness.
I was recently made aware of product called the ADEO Fitness Trainer that combines talking GPS technology and is ipod/MP3 ready. The local Australian distributor, Satellite Fitness describe it as: “75% of runners listen to music during workouts. With Adeo you hear your favourite music PLUS receive real time spoken feedback. Great for motivation and milestone alerts. Fitness gear that works alone or connected to any MP3 player like the Apple iPod®” . It has a very extensive online management application and unlike other products that can only track your run, this one can be set up to track a variety of activities including cycling, hiking, running and many more. This product would be especially good for those serious about their fitness but would also appeal to people like me who love technology and need to exercise! Although I haven’t had the opportunity to use the ADEO Fitness Trainer myself, I’d be interested to hear from anyone who uses it to get your thoughts on this product. Links of interest: motionlingo

Motivation – tech gadgets
Recently, I posted that this year I want to be fitter and healthier at 36 than what I was at 35.
So far, I’ve done reasonably well. I am generally more active and mixing up my exercise routine to ensure I don’t get too bored. One problem I am having though which is sort of annoying is that my foot gets pins and needles and goes numb when I do high impact workouts. That’s a bummer because cardio is important. But when your foot is asleep, nasty things tend to happen. For instance, if you are on a stair stepper and really working hard, then all of a sudden you can’t feel anything in your left foot, you’re going to literally slip off the stair. Luckily, I was able to catch myself before I fell sideways onto a table.
As you can imagine, working on my stair stepper is no longer enjoyable. I imagine that regardless of whether my foot kept falling asleep or not, that, in time I would have become bored, which I am!
So this brings me to my question. What can I do to keep myself motivated?
I know I should keep myself fit and healthy. And generally speaking I am. I don’t smoke, rarely eat takeout and try to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum. As a rule, I don’t drink on weekdays and might have a glass of wine or beer on a Saturday night. So without any health issues or major weight problem, keeping motivated is difficult.
I’m a gadget girl. I love technology, most of you know this because you listen to our podcast. With this in mind, I started to think more about technical gadgets that aid people like myself in keeping motivated. For me, I love technology so much and am so interested to know how they work that I’d workout just to get a feel for the product.
That being said, my mission in the coming weeks is to investigate tech gadgets designed to keep people motivated and most importantly, fit and healthy!
We already reviewed the Nike+ kit which Michael adores but there are other products out there.
So if you have a product that you think might be of interest to our readers or you happen to have a groovy gadget that you use to exercise, let me know. I’ll post as soon as I find these products. I may need to convince my better half that I need to invest in these goodies, for the benefit of the ihealth readers, of course!
Computers aid breast screening tests
Cancer Research UK scientists have reported that using a computer aided screening programme (CAD) could dramatically speed up breast cancer screening.
Scientists have found that using computers as well as experts could reduce the work of radiologists by half.
The computer-aided detection (CAD) programme reads each mammograms for irregularities that could be caused by cancer tumours. When the computer finds anything unusual, it marks it for a radiologist to check.

Microsoft to launch “Zune” – their answer to the iPod
Microsoft is planning on launching their answer to the iPod, Zune, for Christmas 06′.
For those interested, we have embedded a preview video which shows it’s features. Of interest is the wi-fi access, something we at iHealth are always interested in. The more devices with wi-fi access, the more health information and education we can deliver within our health services to the public.
Other features of interest is the social sharing system that lets people send songs for three days or three plays.

Hi iHealth listeners, Michael has posted a review in our newly setup forums on his new Nike + iPod kit.
Feel free to ask him any questions about his new toy and maybe throw out a challenge or two! I personally would love to hear that he has to do a run, purely for testing purposes of course!
