The Importance of Integrity
May 1st, 2009
I am drawn to people in my life who I believe have integrity. For me it’s a slow process, with family and especially when meeting new people.
I believe in connections. It’s something that is hard to describe but most of us know exactly what it means when we meet people in our lives that we just click with.
But even after that initial feeling of clicking, I am somewhat guarded. There are very few people that I’ve been totally open with when first meeting.
Over time you start to see a persons value system. It comprises a set of consistent values and measures and can tell you a great deal about a person. How they live their life and how they treat others pretty much defines who they are.
I am a pretty good judge of character but every so often I get caught out. It can be a really difficult thing to discover, especially when you thought there was a connection that would develop into a great friendship.
I was chatting to a friend of mine last Saturday night about this very topic. How we handle it could not be any more different. My friend takes it very personally and assumes it’s her fault, I tend to trace back our conversations and look for anything that may have started a fracture.
Sometimes your gut instinct can let you down. People can let you down. All you can do is keep to your value system, push on and stay true to yourself. If you can’t think of anything you have said or done, then put it down to a faulty connection and move on.
The most important thing is to keep your integrity. Be a good friend to those who respect you and most importantly, respect yourself.
