Well, another year is almost over and it’s time once again for people to start thinking about 2009.

Inevitably, it is also the time when many, often fuelled with too much booze and New Year’s Eve cheer declare that this will be the year that they get in shape, lose those extra pounds and maybe, if all goes well, run a marathon.

Okay, so maybe the marathon statement is a little far fetched but I would say that a good portion of them will try and shed the pounds in 2009. Of course, they wake up New Year’s Day, tired and possibly hungover and all that cheer is quickly replaced with the urge to throw up, sleep and maybe eat something later in the day once the nausea passes.

So, to help you on the way to better health and a smaller you, I’ve decided to list my number 1 tip to setting a resolution for 2009. Here we go….

No 1

Don’t set a resolution.

Yup, you heard me. Don’t set a resolution on New Year’s Eve.

Let’s rewind to New Year’s Eve. Midnight is approaching, you have drunk a little too much and thinking about who you want to be standing next too once the countdown starts, better to hug and kiss someone you like rather than someone you don’t ;)

You are merry, happy and impaired. Everything seems and looks good at this point in the evening. People around you start splurting out resolutions. I am going to climb Mr Everest. I am going to quit smoking. I am going to blog less. I am going to make a fortune. I am going to find the love of my life. The list goes on. You chime in, I AM going to lose WEIGHT! I AM going to get FIT!

Countdown starts. You pick up your drink, stand next to the person you plan to shower with New Year’s Eve cheer and start counting down.

10! I am going to lose WEIGHT.
9! I am going to be FIT
8! I am going to do IT
7! I will start TOMORROW!
6! Wait a sec, I am going out TOMORROW
5! Okay, the next DAY then!
4! Buggar, I have DINNER plans
3! Let’s aim for NEXT WEEK
2! I am DEFINITELY going to try!
1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Some will actually do it you know. But the majority won’t stick to it. So don’t set a resolution this year.

Instead, eat well and exercise, keep looking for fun ways to continue. It shouldn’t be something you plan to achieve in a few months either. It isn’t a race. There shouldn’t be an end date to being healthy.

Most importantly, enjoy New Year’s Eve. Don’t drink too much, don’t drive.
Do have fun. Do look forward to 2009 with excitement.

I’d like to thank you all for supporting InDenialHealth in 2008. It has been a blast. I have met some amazing and inspirational people online this year and can’t wait to meet more of you in 2009!
