5 food myths
July 18th, 2008
Food myths, got to love them. Up until recently I thought you couldn’t refreeze meat, apparently my Mum and Nan have had that little gem wrong their entire lives! I haven’t yet told Nan about it, I pretty much know the response I’m going to get, it will involve scoffing at me. How can you argue with a woman who has lived over 80 years on this planet? You can’t ;)
1. Carbs are bad for you
All carbs are not created equal. Some are actually very good for you and are considered brain food. The problem with carbohydrates is that people tend to over eat. Carbs like pasta and flour are highly processed so turn into sugar quite quickly.
Wholegrain carbs are your best bet to keep you full and satisfied. This article, Carbohydrates: The bottom line is a great source of information.
2. Fresh Vegetables are better than frozen
Some frozen vegetables are even more nutritious than the fresh ones. Picking and processing of frozen vegetables happens quite quickly so the nutrients are locked in.
When you consider that many vegetables and fruit on our supermarket shelves are weeks or months old, it stands to reason that much of the goodness is lost. This article from Australia gives a little more information on how and why supermarkets are storing their vegetables for longer periods: Our tests show supermarket apples are up to 10 months old
3. Turning vegetarian means I’ll lose weight
If this were true then the majority of cows and chickens would live long lives. Sadly, for them and us being vegetarian doesn’t mean you will be thin. Like most things relating to diet, it’s what you eat and how much of it you consume. Vegetarians need to be aware of their food choices just like the rest of us meat eating folk.
4. Don’t eat after 7pm
This one actually has merit. It’s a good idea to not eat at least two or three hours before you are going to bed.
You need to remember that keeping control of your weight comes down to burning more calories than you consume.
If you eat before going to bed then you are just going to be laying there not burning it off. Unless of course you sleep walk or should I say power walk.
5. Light Olive oil means it has less calories
Afraid not. It refers to the clarity or color of the oil.

Frozen veggies are great especially since I tend to overcook fresh ones. I know that overcooking removes the nutrients. If I do buy fresh, it’s from a produce stand or market where I know the veggies are fresh. We’ll either eat them uncooked or I’ll try to parboil them (try!). But most of the time we buy frozen.
