Hi iHealth readers. First of all, Happy New Year!

I haven’t set new year resolutions for quite a few years now as I don’t personally believe in them. This might be due to the fact that I never did manage to fulfill them!

But this year I did set myself a challenge. I want to be healthier and fitter at 36 than what I was at 35. My birthday is 10 December and I must admit that I felt flat on my 35th Birthday. Admittedly, I was suffering from a terrible virus which had taken it’s toll on me after two weeks. I felt sick, tired and generally unfit.

That being said, I have not be exercising enough and had noticed last year that I was tired by 4.00pm most days and waking up feeling like I had not slept enough. Apart from that, I felt that my body had lost some of it’s toning.

So by midnight New Year’s Eve, I promised myself to try and eat better and exercise regularly. I did not promise myself to lose weight or diet. That’s not my goal. I’m sure though that by the time 10 December comes around again that I should at the very least have maintained my usual weight.

I’m off to a good start. I’ve cut down my meal portions and have stayed clear of chocolate, sweet biscuits and butter (my one vice!).

I have exercised everyday and will vary it to keep myself interested.

I’ve got one major goal in mind before reaching 36. We are going to Port Douglas, Great Barrier Reef in August. We plan on doing several hikes in the Daintree Forest and I want to be fit. I don’t want to go to this amazing place and feel exhausted and unable to fully enjoy my surroundings due to being unfit. So, I have 8 months to achieve my goal.

I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going. I’m contemplating adding a fitness diary which I’ll update daily. This might help me to keep focused.

It can be so hard at times to stick to goals like this. I wish I could be like those people who seem to actually enjoy exercising!
