The city board of health voted unanimously yesterday to ban restaurants from using the oil containing trans fats for frying by July 1 next year, and eliminate them from all foods by July 1, 2008.

New York has become the first major city in the United States to ban use of artificial trans fats in more than 20,000 restaurants and eateries.

The trans fats are linked with coronary heart diseases by researchers.
