UK – Flu stock running late
October 2nd, 2006
There are concerns today that vulnerable people in the UK may have to wait for their flu jabs.
The Government has confirmed that stocks will be arriving late. The flu jab is normally given to people in high-risk groups including those over 65, people with Diabetes and other chronic conditions and those with respiratory conditions, like asthma.
The Health Department has ordered 15.2 million doses for across the UK – around a million more than last year. It said there should be enough doses in the long-term but some patients would have to wait.
It was claimed last year that GP’s were giving the flu jab to “worried well” people, instead of prioritising at-risk groups.
There are fears that an early flu season could leave thousands without protection from the annual jab.
